Sea Dragon Lodge featured in TIME’s 2023 World’s Greatest Places

We’re excited to share that Sea Dragon Lodge has been featured in TIME magazine’s prestigious “World’s Greatest Places 2023” list, highlighting Kangaroo Island, Australia, for its remarkable recovery after the devastating 2019-2020 bushfires.

When the fires ravaged Kangaroo Island, burning half of the island and claiming the lives of thousands of koalas and other wildlife, the region’s future seemed uncertain. However, thanks to extensive conservation efforts, the island is now flourishing once again. Visitors to Kangaroo Island can experience a landscape teeming with greenery, where iconic species such as the white-blossomed daisy bush and the Kangaroo Island yucca have made a triumphant return, blooming in the aftermath of the fire. The Western River Refuge, a predator-proof sanctuary founded in 2021, has played a crucial role in fostering the recovery of rare species like the sooty dunnart.

As highlighted by TIME, eco-tourism has been a key part of the island’s revival. Sea Dragon Lodge has played an essential role in this movement, with its sustainable practices and focus on environmental preservation. The lodge is powered by solar energy and rainwater, offering guests a unique opportunity to stay in luxury accommodations while minimizing their ecological footprint. Our new ocean-view suites, completed in March 2023, provide breathtaking views of the island’s rugged coastline, where kangaroos roam freely on our 250-acre beachfront property.

TIME’s feature also recognizes other eco-conscious initiatives on the island, including new conservation tours by Exceptional Kangaroo Island and the reopening of Southern Ocean Lodge with off-grid guest suites, all of which contribute to Kangaroo Island’s reputation as a beacon of resilience.

We’re proud to be part of the island’s story, offering guests a chance to experience the beauty and sustainability of a truly special place.
